Buccaneers hoping to bring back throwback ‘creamsicle’ uniforms, ‘Bucco Bruce’?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t worn the team’s iconic and infamous creamsicle jerseys — along with the white helmet adorned by “Bucco Bruce” — since the 2012 season. Could a change in that regard possibly be on the horizon?

Buccaneers owner/co-chairman Joel Glazer participated in a virtual chat with the media this week, during which he teased a potential return of the team’s classic throwback look. One roadblock stands in the way, however, as such a change would require the NFL to tweak its uniform and helmet protocols and policies.

In 2013, the NFL instituted a one-helmet rule that barred teams from wearing different helmets during the season, citing safety reasons. The league would have to amend the rule for the Bucs’ hopes of rocking the creamsicle jerseys and “Bucco Bruce” helmets to come to fruition.

“On the throwbacks, we’re constantly at the league’s doorstep trying to get them to move so we can wear our throwbacks,” Glazer said, per the Tampa Bay Times. “We’re not there yet, but there’s discussions going on, and hopefully at some point in the future that’ll happen, because I know how popular they are with our fans.”

The NFL is expected to revisit the rule standing in the way of the Bucs’ throwback hopes this offseason and the belief is the league will amend it.

Despite the push to bring back the throwbacks, Glazer did note that the current iteration of the team’s jersey scheme — consisting of Buccaneer red, pewter, orange, black and block lettering — were “unbelievably well-received” by fans.

“It was great to see a little more traditional look than we’ve had in the past,” Glazer added. “I know our players liked it, our fans liked it, and it all worked out.”

Given that the Buccaneers won a Super Bowl in the new uniform concept introduced ahead of the 2020 campaign, odds are the team would be perfectly happy if the team has to wear them the entire 2021 season. Rocking “Bucco Bruce” helmets and donning the classic creamsicle jersey look would just be icing on the cake.
