Yankees’ Luke Voit on Game 5 vs. Rays: ‘We’re going to win it’
It’s a winner-take-all scenario on Friday night at Petco Park when the New York Yankees face the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 of the ALDS, and one player involved all but made a guarantee about the outcome.
The Yankees evened up the series at two games apiece with a 5-1 victory Thursday, and first baseman Luke Voit has all the confidence in the world that the team will now punch its ticket for the ALCS.
“We’re going to win it,” Voit said after the victory, per NJ.com.
While Voit did not technically say the word “guarantee,” to suggest that’s not exactly what he did would be a dubious assertion, indeed.
The Yankees slugger, who broke out in Game 4 with a second-inning solo shot — his first of the postseason after hitting an MLB-best 22 round-trippers during the regular season — has a compelling reason to have so much confidence. And it begins and ends with who the Yankees will have taking the mound in Game 5.
“Obviously, you plan to have Gerrit (Cole) on the mound, and that’s the best situation possible for us,” Voit said. “Big win, big momentum for us (on Thursday night). But it’s a big game for them, too. We know we’re going to get their best and they’ve got all their bullpen arms for (Friday). We know what we’re going to get and we’re going to keep fighting.”
The Rays will have Tyler Glasnow toe the rubber to counter the Yankees ace. The flamethrower will go on only two days rest after throwing 93 pitches across five innings to earn a Game 2 victory.
The stage has been set for what should be a thrilling matchup in a decisive Game 5. Whether Voit’s “guarantee” proves to be a fortuitous prediction or leaves the first baseman eating crow remains to be seen.
