Joe Biden quotes Doc Rivers during campaign speech
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden highlighted powerful comments recently made by Doc Rivers in a campaign speech delivered Tuesday on the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg.
While coaching the Los Angeles Clippers at the NBA’s Walt Disney World bubble last month, Rivers — who has since been hired as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers — made a powerful speech about being Black in America.
Rivers’ emotional comments came in response to how Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man, was shot seven times in the back by officers in front of his children in Kenosha, Wisc., on Aug. 23.
Among the words spoken by Rivers, his voice cracking at times, that resonated most was what he said about Black Americans and people of color: “It’s amazing to me why we keep loving this country and this country does not love us back.”
Biden highlighted those very words during his campaign speech this week in Pennsylvania.

“Doc Rivers, the basketball coach,” Biden said, “choking back tears when he said, ‘We’re the ones getting killed. We’re the ones getting shot. We’ve been hung. It’s amazing how we keep loving this country, and this country does not love us back.’
“I think about that. I think about what it takes for a Black person to love America. That is a deep love for this country that has for far too long never been recognized.”
It merits noting during this currently contentious and polarizing presidential race that Rivers also reacted to Donald Trump condemning NBA players for kneeling during the anthem in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and against racial injustice during the league’s return to play in Orlando, Fla.
What’s more, one of the NBA’s biggest and most outspoken stars previously committed to campaigning for the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris ticket in the coming weeks. Biden obviously realizes Rivers’ powerful message on matters of race in the U.S. aligns and resonates with his supporters.
