Tom Brady edging Cam Newton in jersey sales by narrowest of margins

The race for the top-selling jersey as Week 1 of NFL season gets underway is an infinitesimally tight one, as Tom Brady holds the slimmest of margins over Cam Newton.

The overriding narrative here is that both former NFL MVPs joined new teams this offseason, with Brady joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a two-decade run with the New England Patriots. Newton of course has been anointed as the six-time Super Bowl winner’s heir on Bill Belichick’s squad.

Given how both players have a lot of new fans who want to own their jerseys — not to mention their superstar status — it makes sense their new team-affiliated gear is flying off the shelves.

Brady and Newton are currently No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on the best-selling jersey list at this point. While intriguing enough on its own, it’s how only 50 sales separate the two quarterbacks during NFL Kickoff Week is what makes the story so compelling.

Brady’s jerseys customarily rank near the top when sales totals are compiled every NFL season — his Patriots jersey sales even surged earlier this year when his next step was still unknown — and Newton has been widely popular in that regard during his career as well.

All that being said, it will be interesting to see how the Brady vs. Newton jersey sale race shakes out as the season progresses. It’s not even the first time the two have been pitted against one another ahead of the 2020 campaign, although the previous one was much more amusing without question.
