LeBron James, NFL stars mock Washington NFL team’s generic name

It was announced Thursday that Washington’s NFL team will be hereby known as the “Washington Football Team” until a new moniker is officially adopted at some point in the future.

The team’s new name, along with logo and updated uniforms, were revealed in a series of tweets from Adam Schefter of ESPN and others.

Of course, there have been no shortage of reactions to the announcement, and many who have weighed in on the news mocked and ridiculed the astonishingly generic name.

Among those who brought the sarcasm were several high-profile pro athletes. Those who shared their unfavorable reactions were primarily NFL players, but Los Angeles Lakers superstar and huge NFL fan LeBron James, as well as many others, weighed in as well.

To be fair, a handful of Washington players responded favorably to the announcement, although the case can be made they had little choice but to react in such a manner.

The change to “Washington Football Team” is temporary, and the evolving situation likely stems in large part from how owner Dan Snyder is embroiled in a reported trademark battle over the desired name.

Until a new name is adopted, whenever that may be, fans will be able to purchase “Washington Football Team” merchandise at Fanatics and NFL Shop in the interim.

One has to imagine some NFL fans might buy this officially licensed gear just to be snarky.
