Mike Tyson to fight ‘Jaws’ in upcoming ‘Shark Week’ special
Mike Tyson has reasserted himself in popular culture of late thanks to his flirtation with a potential return to the ring. No further evidence of the former heavyweight champ’s inspiring return is needed, though, now with the news that Tyson will be featured on this summer’s edition of Discovery Channel’s iconic “Shark Week.”
Per an announcement Wednesday shared by the official Twitter account of “Shark Week,” Tyson will “fight” a shark in what is comically being touted as “Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef,” which will air on Aug. 9.

The nature of the so-called bout is unclear at best, but Discovery Channel provided a synopsis that includes a well-executed quip alluding to Tyson’s biting history: “With famed ring announcer Michael Buffer calling the shots, these two heavyweights will square off underwater, where Mike Tyson will try to score a TKO over the massive shark. And don’t worry, no sharks were harmed (or bitten) in the making of this episode.”
Tyson himself provided a patently colorful quote about his participation in the event.
“I took on this challenger to overcome fears I still deal with in life,” said Tyson. “I equate this with overcoming my fear of getting back into the ring at 54 years old. I learned from this experience doing Shark Week that whatever intimidates me, I am still able to step up to the challenge of overcoming anything that would prevent me from accomplishing my life’s mission of reaching my highest potential in life and bringing me closer to God.”
Tyson of course has been in the news quite a bit recently due to how the boxing legend has been teasing a potential return to the ring in some capacity at the age of 53.
While it may sound somewhat absurd, footage shared by Tyson himself on social media of late establishes how he remains in remarkably good shape and still possesses impressive speed and intimidating power at his advanced age.
What’s more, a Tyson biopic is in the works, with Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx portraying the larger-than-life boxer in the film.
And now, a bout against “Jaws” on “Shark Week.” Don’t call it a comeback, indeed.
