Joel Embiid arrives for flight to Orlando in Tyvek suit, mask, gloves

Joel Embiid made his departure to Orlando, Fla., on Thursday a particularly conspicuous one, as it was difficult to miss the Philadelphia 76ers superstar given he was filmed exiting a car in a Tyvek suit, mask and gloves.

Embiid has been among the more outspoken players concering the risks inherent to the NBA’s return to action, which is tentatively scheduled for July 30 at the Walt Disney World Resort’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Sixers star’s safety-first choice of attire makes perfect sense in that regard, as documented in footage shared by numerous Philly media outlets, including NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Earlier this week, Embiid explained why he is “not a big fan” of the playing in the Orlando bubble.

“I hated the idea,” Embiid said when asked about fears around the bubble league, per Yahoo Sports. “I feel like, with everything that has been going on, it’s unfortunate what’s been going on in the world. …

“All I want to be is, you know, stay healthy and stay safe, keep the people around me safe. I want to make sure I’m able to live for a long time and not have any sort of, I don’t know, consequences in the future.”

Despite his reservations about the situation, Embiid insisted he’s intent on doing his job while in Orlando.

“It doesn’t matter the fact that I don’t like that idea, and I still don’t believe in it, and I don’t think it’s going to be safe,” Embiid added.

Embiid of course had the option of opting out of playing in the NBA’s resumption, but it sounds like the star felt an obligation to play despite his concerns. The fact that he arrived in Orlando in the Tyvek suit certainly illustrates as well how Embiid plans to exercise extreme caution while doing so.

Perhaps of most importance to the Sixers and their fans, Embiid made it clear in June that he has “something to prove” once the league finally gets back on the court.
