Tom Brady working on golf game after nightmarish play in ‘The Match’

Tom Brady had a day to forget in late May — for the most part — when he joined fellow NFL legend Peyton Manning and golf icons Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson for The Match: Champions for Charity event.

Whether it was inspired by his nightmarish performance or some unrelated reason altogether, Brady recently felt compelled to showcase himself getting in some swings on the range.

The new Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback shared footage of himself this week working with his driver, a club that Brady mostly avoided employing during “The Match.”

Brady tagged Mickelson, his playing partner in the charity event, in the social media dispatch, along with the message, “Bombs.” He also jokingly relayed the message, “Just in time for football season” in the Instagram story.

Brady was roundly mocked and ridiculed for his substandard level of play throughout a majority of the event held at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla.

It does merit noting, however, that Brady did pull off the shot of the day when he holed out from 100-plus yards for birdie on the seventh hole. Unfortunately, even that brilliant display of shotmaking ended in nightmarish fashion, as Brady ended up comically splitting his pants while retrieving his ball from the hole.

To be fair, Brady actually ended up playing some decent golf as “The Match” progressed before he and Mickelson narrowly lost to the Woods-Manning pairing, and he’s demonstrated a pretty good sense of humor ever since over his tough day on the links.

Most importantly, though, the event raised over $20 million for COVID-19 relief amid the ongoing pandemic. Brady presumably is fine with how a little on-course embarrassment resulted in such an admirable accomplishment.

That apparently doesn’t mean Brady has given up on tightening up his golf game, as evidenced by the footage he has shared.
