Rudy Gobert says he and Donovan Mitchell are ‘on the same page’

There has been no shortage of speculation concerning the status of the relationship between Utah Jazz teammates Ruby Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, but both players appear inclined to downplay the situation.

The issues between Gobert and Mitchell stem from the former’s reported “careless” attitude back in March about the then-burgeoning coronavirus pandemic before both Jazz stars tested positive for COVID-19.

Despite the reported animosity between the two, Gobert insists he and Mitchell have since patched things up.

“We told each other what we had to say to each other.¬†We are both on the same page. We both want to win,” Gobert said this week, per Tim McMahon of ESPN. “We both think that we have a great opportunity, and we know that we need each other. We talked about a lot of things, but the main thing was that we are on the same page and the fact that our team needs us. We can win together. That’s the most important thing.

Gobert behaved questionably during a press conference in the days ahead of his positive diagnosis in March when he infamously touched reporters’ recording equipment laid out on a table.

After Mitchell also tested positive, he seemingly called out Gobert in a social media post. Reports at the time suggested that the teammates’ relationship was “unsalvageable” due to Gobert’s cavalier actions.

Golbert quickly apologized for his conduct, and Mitchell has insisted on several occasions over the past few months amid the NBA’s hiatus that things were good between the two, including just recently.

“For us, it’s like, there’s going to be tension,” said Mitchell, who was adamant that their long-uneasy relationship didn’t influence his reaction toward Gobert after testing positive for the coronavirus, per McMahon’s report. “There’s going to be back-and-forth. Obviously, I feel like I should be right here, he feels like he should be right there. But it’s always going to happen. It happens on every team …

“So I feel like in a work environment, you’re not going to always get along or go out to eat and hang out with your teammates. So that’s that.”

It certainly will be interesting to see whether Gobert and Mitchell can repair their perceptively fractured relationship when the Jazz convene in Orlando later this month. While both stars are doing their best to say everything is copacetic between them, it certainly sounds like some animosity remains, at least on Mitchell’s behalf.
