Patrick Mahomes, Tyrann Mathieu leading Chiefs’ voter registration drive

Patrick Mahomes and Tyrann Mathieu have been extremely active of late amid the outcry over systemic racism and inequality, and now the teammates are heading up the Kansas City Chiefs’ voter registration drive ahead of the 2020 election.

Both Mahomes and Mathieu have been highly visible members of the K.C. community since each joined the Chiefs organization. This newest endeavor is of particular importance to Mathieu as it resonates with the Black Lives Matter movement and ongoing protests against racial injustice in the wake of the death of George Floyd on May 25 while in Minneapolis police custody.

“If we’re able to impact voter registration and give those people a voice and let those people go into their communities and select their leaders, that’s going to be very important going forward, per AP reporter Dave Skretta. “If you want to change anything, you’re going to have to educate people on what it is they have to do to change things. A lot of times it’s more than just protesting. They really have to find a call to action. I think voter registration can impact a lot of people.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised team owner Clark Hunt for pledging his full support to the drive — not to mention players’ other social activism efforts — saying the backing has been “unbelievable.”

Prior to this most recent community outreach effort, Mahomes and Mathieu appeared in a video last week featuring NFL players that followed the league’s much-maligned initial response to the fallout from Floyd’s death. The league took note.

The video inspired NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to issue a video statement of his own last Friday in which he said the league was “wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” adding that the league condemns “racism and the systematic oppression of Black People.”

Mahomes, who has been in contact with Goodell of late, praised the commissioner’s latest efforts, saying he has “shown his support for us.”
