Cameron Brate: First workout with Tom Brady ‘a little weird’

Tom Brady worked out with his new Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammates for the first time earlier this week during an informal practice, and it sounds like playing the role of tutor to the future Hall of Fame quarterback was a little surreal for Cameron Brate.

The Bucs tight end made an appearance Wednesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio and relayed how strange it was to not only share the same field as a player routinely referred to as the G.O.A.T. but also for being tasked with teaching Brady the team’s offense.

“It’s a little weird working out with him at the beginning of his Bucs tenure,” Brate said. “We’re teaching him our verbiage — its kind of a backwards way of how it’s probably going to progress during the season with him teaching us a lot about the game and how he sees things. Right now it’s only a couple weeks with the Bucs and he’s trying to figure out what we call stuff and we’re kind of teaching him the offense.”

Brate also noted how excited he is over the Bucs’ acquisition of future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski, who has already made quite the impression despite only meeting his teammates in an informal manner.

Along with Brate, wide receiver Mike Evans, tight end O.J. Howard, running back Dare Ogunbowale and center Ryan Jensen joined Brady at the workout, which was permitted by the NFL in accordance with Florida state guidelines. Backup quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin were also at Tampa’s Berkeley Preparatory School for the practice.

It’s understandable that Brate felt a little awkward over the nature of the workout due to how Bucs players were showing the sage veteran Brady the ropes. That being said, there is no question that Jensen had to navigate the strangest interaction with the team’s new superstar quarterback.
