Dana White against Mike Tyson’s potential return to ring
Mike Tyson has been generating a lot of buzz recently over a potential return to the ring at the age of 53, and one of his closest pals in the fighting business doesn’t think it’s a good idea.
UFC president Dana White weighed in on Tyson’s purported attempt to resurrect his boxing career during an appearance this week on Sportsnet 590 The FAN’s “Tim and Sid” show. It’s clear that White is completely against Tyson making another foray into the ring.
“I love Mike Tyson,” White said, as transcribed by Boxing Scene. “I’m begging him not to go fight. I said ‘you look awesome, you’re still explosive, you’re obviously still powerful, you’re one of the all-time greats.
“Mike, you’re 53, please don’t do it, please.”
White’s mention of how powerful and explosive Tyson still appears despite being in his 50s stems from two videos the former heavyweight champ has shared in the past few weeks showcasing his still-lethal pugilistic talents.
The most recent footage shared by Iron Mike is indeed impressive, not to mention terrifying.
With no shortage of incredibly lucrative offers coming Tyson’s way amid his supposed comeback attempt, White suggested he would personally do something to ensure his pal doesn’t get back in the ring.
“Bottom line is I don’t want Mike to fight,” White said. “If it comes down to where he is about to do something crazy, I might have to jump in and figure out something for him not to do it.”
It of course remains to be seen what, if anything, comes from Tyson teasing a resumption of his boxing career. White believes that even if it doesn’t end up as some kind of bout, Tyson has a plan in the works.
“He absolutely wants to do something,” White said. “I don’t know what he’s going to do but he absolutely wants to do something.”
