Is Josh McDaniels behind Patriots’ lack of interest in Cam Newton?
Cam Newton continues to languish in free agency, and it sounds like one of the most discussed potential suitors for the veteran quarterback will likely decide against taking a flier on the former MVP.
Despite an inordinate amount of buzz, all signs point to the New England Patriots passing on Newton. The reason behind the purported lack of interest is believed to be how Josh McDaniels is not “necessarily high” on Newton, according to Joseph Person of The Athletic.
The Patriots offensive coordinator’s lukewarm regard for Newton is said to have originally surfaced when McDaniels interviewed for the Carolina Panthers’ head-coaching vacancy earlier this year.
Interestingly enough, there was a report earlier this week that suggested Newton remained a “major factor” in the Patriots’ ongoing deliberations concerning the team’s plan at quarterback next season.
Presumed starter Jarrett Stidham by all accounts has the full support of Bill Belichick and the rest of the coaching staff, stemming in large part to his familiarity with the offense after a one-season stint serving as Tom Brady’s understudy.
As things currently stand, veteran Brian Hoyer will serve as Stidham’s backup, a role in which Newton has no interest, whether that be with the Patriots or elsewhere. Newton is also believed to be content with playing the long game when it comes to signing with his next team.
Given his desire for a starter’s job and the lack of options in that regard, Newton should be prepared to wait for some time. That notion is even further reinforced by the fact that due to the coronavirus pandemic, teams are currently unable to have their own doctors examine Newton.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old’s injuries issues are of course well-documented. Newton has undergone three surgeries in the past three years, including one to treat a Lisfranc fracture that ultimately led to his landing on IR after appearing in only two games last season.
How the Newton narrative plays out is a complete unknown at this point, but it appears that the next chapter in his NFL career won’t come with the Patriots.
