Cam Newton remains a ‘major factor’ in Patriots’ QB decision?
The New England Patriots have gone on record multiple times since Tom Brady’s departure to insist that the organization has complete confidence in Jarrett Stidham’s ability to replace the future Hall of Famer in 2020.
What’s more, the Patriots are said to have had little to no interest in signing free-agent signal-caller Cam Newton.
The fact that these two storylines complement one another as it relates to the Patriots’ immediate quarterbacking future is why a recent claim by an NFL insider is so compelling.
Jay Glazer of The Athletic reported Tuesday in a mailbag column that Newton remains on the Patriots’ radar despite all indications suggesting otherwise.
“Whether they still bring in someone to compete with [Stidham] still remains to be seen — there’s one major factor out there in Cam Newton,” Glazer writes. “But they do like Stidham an awful lot. I think they are going to give him every shot to win [the starting job].”
Stidham is unquestionably inexperienced, having thrown only four passes last season after the Patriots selected him in the fourth round of 2019 NFL Draft. Newton, meanwhile, obviously will bring a wealth of veteran savvy to any team that decides to sign him, including potentially the Patriots.
New England, however, is believed to have more confidence in Stidham to capably start next season given his extensive knowledge of the offense, with veteran Brian Hoyer serving as backup.
Newton, 30, would have to learn the system on the fly, something that would of course be hampered by NFL teams having to go all-virtual in their offseason activities amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The lack of OTA and minicamp reps obviously will hamper Newton’s ability to familiarize himself with any teams’ system, which along with his injury issues has contributed to the 2015 NFL MVP continued languishing on the market. Newton for his part is believed to fine with playing the long game when it comes to signing with the team.
How Newton’s future plays out and whether it intersects with the Patriots’ plans this season remains to be seen. That said, Glazer’s nugget certainly will keep the Newton-Patriots speculation humming.
