Yankees, Giants, Knicks, NY teams release ‘We are in this together’ video

Professional sports teams based in New York, including those from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, WNBA and NWSL, have joined together to produce a video in which the organizations rally around a unifying message amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Released simultaneously on the teams’ respective official social media channels on Thursday morning, the “We are in this together” video features sobering images of empty subway stations, people living in isolation and first responders working tirelessly on the front lines.

These striking photographs are followed by game-action footage featuring the Yankees, Giants, Knicks and the rest of New York’s teams, including those based in Buffalo — along with fans and everyday people wearing team regalia and/or playing sports — imagery which coveys how sports can serve as a unifying, restorative and celebratory force.

New York of course has been one of the states hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic. According to data from Johns Hopkins University, New York has 207,512 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and has seen a staggering 9,999 deaths as of Wednesday.

There have been some mildly encouraging signs that the worst might be over in New York due to the state starting to successfully bend the curve (with the caveat that social distancing and other policies to combat the spread of COVID-19 are maintained).

That being said, NYC mayor Bill de Blasio indicated earlier this week that when it comes to fans returning to the city’s iconic stadiums and arenas, such a resumption of some semblance of normalcy won’t be happening anytime soon.
