Cam Newton, Tyrod Taylor workout fuels Chargers rumors
What comes next for Cam Newton following his release by the Carolina Panthers remains uncertain, but evidence of a recent workout with Tyrod Taylor will certainly fuel speculation that the Los Angeles Chargers could be a potential landing spot.
An image of Newton and Taylor conducting a workout surfaced on social media Friday morning thanks to Jason B. Hirsch of Sports Illustrated.

When the Chargers parted ways with Philip Rivers — who signed with the Indianapolis Colts — the initial belief was that the team would seek out a veteran quarterback as a potential bridge to a still-undetermined quarterback of the future. However, it was subsequently reported that the Chargers intended to roll with Taylor as their starting quarterback in 2020.
The free-agent market for quarterbacks obviously has changed significantly this week with Newton’s release. While the Chargers conceivably would be a great fit for Newton, there certainly will be other teams that will do their due diligence on the former MVP.
The main issue hampering Newton’s ability to catch on with another team, however, obviously surrounds his inability to stay healthy. What’s more, Newton is coming off an injury-shortened 2019 campaign cut short by surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury on his left foot, which the quarterback continues to rehabilitate.
The fact that NFL teams are unable to examine and/or bring in players with their facilities closed only further complicates matters for Newton.
A healthy Newton, who wants nothing more than to prove his doubters wrong by making a remarkable comeback, without question would be viewed as markedly substantial upgrade over Taylor.
One has to wonder, though, why Taylor would seemingly invite the Chargers to kick the tires on Newton, as signing the former Panthers signal-caller almost certainly would cost him his job.
Then again, perhaps the Newton-Taylor workout has something to do with the former’s upcoming streaming series on Quib and not his NFL future.
