Did Donovan Mitchell take shot at Rudy Gobert over coronavirus diagnosis?
Donovan Mitchell took to Instagram Thursday to provide an update on his coronavirus diagnosis, and it arguably could be inferred that he took a shot at Utah Jazz teammate Rudy Gobert in the process.
Gobert became the first NBA player to be diagnosed with COVID-19 on Wednesday, a development that prompted the NBA to suspend its season as a precaution.
As sports leagues scramble to make sense of how to best approach the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBA was of course left with no choice.
On Thursday, it was then revealed that Mitchell also had been diagnosed with the coronavirus, although he was the only Jazz player to have been designated as such.
Taking to Instagram amid the news, Mitchell expressed gratitude to all well wishers in the wake of his positive test.

Thanks to everyone who has been reaching out since hearing the news about my positive test. We are all learning more about the seriousness of this situation and hopefully people can continue to educate themselves and realize that they need to behave responsibly both for their own health and for the well being of those around them. I appreciate the authorities in Oklahoma who were helpful with the testing process and everyone from the @utahjazz who have been so supportive. I am going to keep following the advice of our medical staff and hope that we can all come together and be there for each other and our neighbors who need our help
What’s most intriguing about Mitchell’s social media dispatch, though, is the following passage:
“We are all learning more about the seriousness of this situation and hopefully people can continue to educate themselves and realize that they need to behave responsibly both for their own health and for the well being of those around them,” Mitchell wrote.
Along with reporting Mitchell’s diagnosis, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN relayed that Jazz players were privately saying that Gobert had been “careless” in his actions in the locker room this week amid uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus.
Gobert also behaved questionably during a press conference during the week when he jokingly touched all the recording equipment laid out on the table.
NBA is suspending its season “until further notice” after Rudy Gobert of Jazz reportedly contracted the #coronavirus. What has make it worse is that he deliberately touched all the mics a few days ago during a press briefing to tell the public that the disease was not a big deal. pic.twitter.com/sSd97adIxr— Ezra Cheung (@ezracheungtoto) March 12, 2020
To assume that Mitchell’s comments on Instagram, while an admirable PSA of sorts, were also a veiled shot at Gobert requires some connecting of the dots that aren’t readily apparent. That being said, in light of Woj’s reporting, it’s arguably possible.
After all, Gobert certainly was not behaving “responsibly both for their own health and for the well being of those around them.”
