Trae Young: ‘Might as well just embrace’ Luka Doncic comparisons

Trae Young feels like he’s been dogged throughout his first two NBA seasons by constant comparisons to Luke Doncic, which he has previously stated is “annoying.”

The Atlanta Hawks star used that term again in a recent interview, but it appears he’s resigned to the fact that such comparisons are here to stay.

During a recent appearance on Bleacher Report’s “Take It There” featuring Taylor Rooks, Young weighed in on how he’s starting to accept that he and Doncic will be metaphorically joined at the hip for the entirety of their respective NBA careers.

“To be honest with you, it’s annoying, but it’s gonna be that way till we’re both done playing,” Young said. “Might as well just embrace it.”

The Hawks selected Doncic with the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Young was taken two spots later at No. 5 by the Dallas Mavericks. A subsequent exchange of draft rights, with Atlanta also obtaining a future first-round pick (which ultimately ended up being Cam Reddish), made the players’ already-eventful evening that much more frenetic.

Both players have enjoyed brilliant starts to their NBA careers, although Doncic’s well-earned meteoric rise to superstardom gives him a huge edge over Young at this point. Arguably enjoying the finest second season in NBA history — which comes after winning the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in a landslide (incidentally over Young) — Doncic is already among the league’s best players.

The case can be made that if it wasn’t for his connection to Doncic, Young might be receiving even greater praise for the solid start to his career. That being said, given Young can’t do anything about the Doncic comparisons, he’s correct to accept the situation and just lean into it.
