Josh Reddick: Astros intend to ‘shut everybody up’ after backlash
The manner in which the Houston Astros organization has completely bungled its initial handling of the sign-stealing scandal has led to unending mock, ridicule and scorn.
It appears the backlash to not only the controversy itself but also the utter mismanagement of an attempt at damage control has gotten under the skin of a few Astros players.
Josh Reddick recently fired back at the critics condemning the Astros by issuing a warning to any and all opponents next season.
“At some point, you have to move on and not give a s–t,” Reddick recently told The Washington Post. “We’re going to go out there and win and shut everybody up.”
Echoing the same defiant tone was Astros pitcher Lance McCullers, who issued a challenge to all the naysayers and smack-talkers sprinkled across major-league rosters who have called out the team in recent weeks.
“[The teams talking trash are] going to have to play us,” McCullers said. “Except for the guys who are popping off the most… Those guys aren’t going to have to face us, which is maybe why they feel like they can speak like that.
“But we’re moving on. That’s not what people may want to hear, but we stood here as men and we addressed [the scandal]. … We’re just looking forward to playing baseball again.”
Astros players seemed to be merely going through the motions when making what critics called half-hearted apologies at the opening of spring training last week. Highlighted by a disastrous press conference by Astros owner Jim Crane, the entire organization collectively came off as completely insincere, hardly a good look.
If the Astros wanted to appear regretful and contrite over their transgressions in an effort to move on from the scandal, things could not have gone worse for the ball club.
All that being said, given the tone and tenor of these most recent comments out of the Astros clubhouse, perhaps the team will instead choose to embrace the role of villains in 2020. In light of the vitriolic reception their apology tour has received so far, it might be their only option.
