Carmelo Anthony: Zion Williamson not ‘comparable to anybody that I’ve seen’

Zion Williamson’s rookie season was unfortunately short-circuited due to injury, but the budding New Orleans superstar is certainly making up for lost time since making his NBA regular-season debut on Jan. 22.

Not only is Williamson living up to the tremendous amount hype reserved only for generational talents, he’s arguably exceeding it.

The outstanding weeks-long run on the NBA stage from Williamson has left some of the biggest names in the league marveling at his extremely unique combination of size, speed and power. That includes Carmelo Anthony, who recently gushed over Williamson’s on-court bona fides.

Anthony had an up-close look at the 19-year-old phenom Tuesday night, when his Portland Trail Blazers came up short in a 138-117 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

“I don’t really think he’s comparable to anybody that I’ve seen,” Anthony said, per Rod Walker of NOLA.com. “Somebody as powerful as that who jumps like that. And you can tell he’s getting better, his feel for the game is getting better.”

Williamson was electric Tuesday, contributing a season-high 31 points, nine rebounds and five assists. He shot 10-of-17 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. The stat line puts Williamson in truly remarkable company.

On the season, Williamson is averaging 21.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 57.6% from the field and 40% from three-point range.

The Pelicans are aware that at 6-foot-6 and 284 pounds, Williamson is able to do things on the court someone his size shouldn’t be able to accomplish, though that comes with risks.

The Pelicans will monitor Williamson’s usage this season with an eye on being overly cautious, especially with him missing the first 44 games of the season due to a torn meniscus.

What Williamson has accomplished under those restrictions so far, though, is only a harbinger of things to come once he’s unleashed. That should terrify every other team in the league.
