Patrick Mahomes: Jimmy Garoppolo and I in ‘great situations’
Patrick Mahomes and Jimmy Garoppolo will stand on opposite sidelines at Hard Rock Stadium come Sunday at Super Bowl LIV, and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback cannot help but see similarities between himself and the San Francisco 49ers signal-caller.
Namely, Mahomes recognizes that both he and Jimmy Garoppolo have been set up for success. Specifically speaking, Mahomes views both the Chiefs and 49ers as organizations poised for big things beyond this Super Bowl appearance.
“Being in the right organization with the right coaches, the right teammates … being in this league, it’s not about one person,” Mahomes said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “It’s not about the quarterback. It’s about your team and how you go out there and play as a team and play together.
“So I think with both me and him, we’ve been put in a lot of great situations and we’ve tried to maximize that every day we get those opportunities. … I think Jimmy would say the same thing.”
The case can be made that Mahomes’ observation is an obvious one given that both quarterbacks are set to appear in their first Super Bowl. That being said, nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, and the future may not play out as predicted or expected.
In that light, Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt indicated this week that the team doesn’t necessarily have to sign Mahomes to an extension this coming offseason, although a massive contract offer at some point is a certainty.
“I hope Patrick is here for his entire career, and that’s going to be our goal,” Hunt said, per ESPN.
Saying he ended up in the “perfect place” in Kansas City, Mahomes echoed Hunt’s sentiments.
“I hope I get to play the rest of my career there now,” Mahomes said. “I mean, just the people and how they accept you and how they care about you more as a person than they do as a player and how much passion they have for the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s special and it’s somewhere I want to be for the rest of my career.”
