Damian Lillard warned Russell Westbrook about meeting in playoffs
There has certainly been no love lost between Damian Lillard and Russell Westbrook amid a round of on-court trash-talking between the two superstars a few weeks back.
Lillard recently revealed another detail concerning the words exchanged between himself and the Houston Rockets star, and it involved a potential showdown in the postseason.
The Portland Trail Blazers (20-27) currently are on the outside looking in when it comes to playoff positioning, sitting 10th in the Western Conference. Only three games back of the Memphis Grizzlies for the eighth and final slot, the Blazers certainly remain in the hunt for a postseason berth.
That’s where Lillard’s smack talk to Westbrook comes into play. During Portland’s win over Houston on Jan. 15, the two had words, with Westbrook saying “Can’t guard me” to Lillard following a foul.
The trash talk elicited an “Lol” out of Lillard on Twitter in response after the game. However, in a recent discussion with Jason Quick of The Athletic, Lillard revealed how he taunted Westbrook during their on-court discussion.
Apparently, Westbrook asked Lillard in the exchange, “What playoff seed are you all?” In response, Lillard replied, “You know I’m the last person you want to see in the playoffs.'”
The Rockets (29-17) are comfortably in playoff positioning, currently the No. 5 slot in the West. Whether or not the Blazers will qualify for the postseason is another story.
If Portland does net a playoff berth, though, Lillard might be right that Westbrook wants no part of a playoff showdown with the Blazers star. After all, it was only last year that Lillard’s series-clinching heroics helped the Trail Blazers upend Westbrook’s then-Thunder squad in the first round of playoffs.
To no surprise, that showdown also featured no shortage of verbal fireworks between the fiery competitors. Expect more of the same each and every time these two step on the same court.
