Kobe Bryant: There’s WNBA stars who could play in NBA ‘right now’

Kobe Bryant has long been a vocal supporter of the WNBA, and the retired Los Angeles Lakers legend recently stated that women should at some point compete with men on the NBA stage.

What’s more, Bryant believes there are superstars in the WNBA who could make the jump to the NBA game without a second thought.

“I think there are a couple of players who could play in the NBA right now, honestly,” Bryant recently told CNN. “There’s a lot of players with a lot of skill that could do it.”

When asked if any players came to mind, Bryant identified three superstars he believes could make the leap immediately.

“Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Elena Della Donne,” Bryant said. “There’s a lot of great players out there so they could certainly keep up with them.”

The discussion revolving around whether women will one day join the ranks of the NBA was inspired in part by how Bryant shares his love for the game of basketball with daughter Gianna, who goes by Gigi.

Not only has Bryant coached his daughter’s AAU team — a role that spawned something of a controversy for him last year — he has been attending Lakers games with her this season.

Bryant is among several NBA stars, both former and current, who have used their considerable influence to draw more attention to the WNBA, which is more than warranted.

Just recently, LeBron James praised the WNBA and WNBPA for coming to terms on a new CBA, which the league has hailed as “groundbreaking.”

It of course remains to be seen whether a woman will ever play in the NBA, but if Kobe thinks it could and should happen, who is going to disagree with The Black Mamba?
