Pat Riley on Heat landing another star: Shamrock is my favorite emoji
Pat Riley delivered a hilarious line when addressing whether the Miami Heat can manage to acquire another star to pair alongside Jimmy Butler, and in doing so invoked the so-called “Luck of the Irish.”
Butler was expected to be a major boost for the Heat when the team landed the occasionally mercurial superstar in a sign-and-trade this past offseason. Not many predicted that Butler would be a catalyst that returned Miami to among the Eastern Conference elite, though.
Riley, however, was optimistic from the onset, and it was clear the Heat felt Butler would be a key cog in making the Heat contenders. The optimism has been rewarded, as the Heat’s 27-12 record has the team sitting in the No. 3 slot in the East.
The belief in NBA circles is that the Heat may need another superstar-caliber player on the roster to be considered legitimate contenders for a championship.
In a report filed by Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps, the notion is forwarded that the Heat will “keep looking to add another star this season or this summer, though any such deal could cut into their ability to get a big free agent in 2021.”
Whether the Heat’s pursuit of a top-tier player comes ahead of the trade deadline on Feb. 6 — which would present complicated issues the team would have to confront — or next offseason, Riley joked his love of a certain emoji indicates good fortune may smile again on the organization.
“I’m an Irish guy,” Riley said. “I sling shamrocks around to my friends all the time. It’s my favorite emoji.”
The fact that Riley likes to “sling shamrocks” to his pals notwithstanding, the Heat president has enjoyed great success in luring superstars to South Beach. LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Shaquille O’Neal certainly come to mind.
Whether Riley’s favorite emjoi will bring the Heat good luck in a pursuit of another star remains to be seen, but it’s arguably foolish to bet against the guy given how well the Butler acquisition has gone for the organization.
