J.J. Watt blasts ‘trash’ headline referring to Kealia Ohai only as his fiancee
J.J. Watt called out a Houston television station on Tuesday morning for referring to Kealia Ohai only as his fiancée and not using her name in an article headline.
Ohai, a star in the National Women’s Soccer League who was the No. 2 pick in the 2014 draft, has been traded by the Houston Dash to the Chicago Red Stars. Reporting on the deal, the original headline from ABC13 Houston shared on social media read, “Houston Dash trade J.J. Watt’s fiancee to Chicago.”
Watt took to Twitter to blast the headline, calling it “trash” before adding that Ohai is an “incredible entirely on her own merit and deserves to be treated as such.”
This headline is trash.— JJ Watt (@JJWatt) January 7, 2020
Kealia Ohai (which is her name by the way, since you didn’t even bother to mention it) is incredible entirely on her own merit and deserves to be treated as such.
Be better than this. https://t.co/82GMrYOv9U
It merits noting that the headline on ABC13’s site reads, “Houston Dash star Kealia Ohai traded to Chicago.” The tweet referring to Ohai only as “J.J. Watt’s fiancee,” however, remains live.
Watt and Ohai have been dating for several years, and while no date for the nuptials have been set, the couple were engaged in May 2019.
Watt’s opinion obviously carries a lot of weight in Houston, both for his fantastic career with the Texans but also for his inspiring philanthropic efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey a few years back.
It goes without saying, then, that Houston media outlets do not want one of the city’s most respected professional athletes to refer to their work as “trash.”
