Zion Williamson gets in some light shooting as rehab progresses
Zion Williamson has yet to see the court this season in his rookie NBA campaign after undergoing right knee surgery eight weeks ago, so it was a welcome sight Tuesday when the No. 1 overall pick got in some light shooting after a New Orleans Pelicans practice.
Williamson has not yet been cleared to fully participate in team shootarounds, but he was involved in Tuesday’s practice, passing to Pelicans teammates during drills.
Afterward, Williamson did some light shooting, footage of which was shared by Andrew Lopez of ESPN.
Zion Williamson is not yet a full participant in shootaround. He was out there today and was passing the ball around. Kenrich Williams said the guys responded well to seeing No. 1 back on the sidelines. https://t.co/rpUaKBPHEl— Andrew Lopez (@_Andrew_Lopez) December 17, 2019
The initial recovery timeline after Williamson suffered a torn meniscus was six to eight weeks, so the rookie is on the tail end of initial estimates. That said, Marc Stein of The New York Times reported that “there was resignation in some corners” about Williamson potentially not seeing the court until some time in 2020.
The Pelicans (6-21) have struggled mightily in Williamson’s absence, and are currently mired in a franchise-record 12-game losing streak. It makes no sense for the Pelicans to rush Williamson along in his rehab given the circumstances, so it stands to reason the team will exercise extreme caution as the young phenom continues to progress through his recovery.
