LeBron James shouts out Lakers fans after opening loss to Clippers
The Lakers’ 2019-20 campaign got off to a disappointing start, losing to the in-city rival Clippers, but LeBron James liked what he saw out of the team’s fans at Staples Center on Tuesday night.
The Lakers dropped their regular-season opener by a score of 112-102 to Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers, but it was clear throughout the night that the crowd was filled with a vocal contingent of Lakers backers.
James made sure to show his appreciation for their outpouring of support in an Instagram post shared on Wednesday.
“What an atmosphere it was last night! Laker Nation showed up and showed out! We owe y’all 1 and many more after that,” James wrote. “Thank you for the support and know we’re going to make y’all proud to be a Laker fan! Let’s all throw that powder up to the heavens above and watch it rain over us all.”
It’s interesting to note that James did indeed bring back his patented chalk toss, as highlighted in his Instagram post. James teased as much over the summer while talking about the the now-started season.
Perhaps James was inspired to lavish praise upon the Lakers fans in attendance Tuesday night given how they booed Leonard in the home arena he and the Clippers share with LeBron’s squad.

It goes without saying that the battle for NBA supremacy in L.A. has begun in earnest between James’ Lakers and Leonard’s Clippers. Anthony Davis previously touted the showdown as “bigger than a rivalry.”
However things shake out between the Lakers and Clippers, it’s safe to say that Los Angeles has two teams with legitimate championship aspirations at the same time for perhaps the first time ever.
