Footage surfaces of Baker Mayfield during Monday’s pregame handshakes

Richard Sherman roundly ripped Baker Mayfield over the Cleveland Browns quarterback’s antics during pregame handshakes on Monday night, but footage has since surfaced that somewhat calls into question the veracity of the San Francisco 49ers cornerback’s accusations.

After the 49ers throttled the Browns by a score of 31-3 on “Monday Night Football,” Sherman claimed Mayfield snubbed him and his Niners teammates during the customary pregame handshakes following the coin toss, calling Mayfield’s conduct “some college s–t.”

“What’s amazing, and annoying, was him not shaking hands at the beginning,” Sherman said, via NFL.com. “That’s some college s—. It’s ridiculous. We’re all trying to get psyched up, but shaking hands with your opponent — that’s NFL etiquette. And when you pull bush league stuff, that’s disrespectful to the game. And believe me, that’s gonna get us fired up.”

Footage shared by the 49ers in an Instagram story surfaced on social media Tuesday morning. In the video, it appears that Mayfield interacted with one 49ers player — tight end George Kittle — at the very least. It also appears that Mayfield shook the hand of another 49ers player right before giving Kittle a hug.

The brief clip debunks Sherman’s perceptible claim that Mayfield gave the cold shoulder to every 49ers player on the field during the pregame handshakes, although it’s entirely possible the Browns quarterback nevertheless snubbed the Niners corner.

It certainly will be interesting to see how the ongoing controversy evolves from here given the emergence of the above video.
