Jimmy Butler: ‘I’m not an a–hole like everybody thinks that I am’

Jimmy Butler has long been saddled with an unflattering reputation for being an extremely difficult person to deal with, but the new Miami Heat player insists things are not quite as bad as the stories suggest.

Butler was officially introduced by the Heat organization at a Friday press conference with Pat Riley standing proudly alongside the team’s big offseason addition.

The enigmatic superstar addressed myriad topics during the press conference, including the unsavory reputation that preceded his arrival in Miami, a notion he took head on in his comments.

“I’m not an a–hole like everybody thinks that I am,” Butler quipped, as reported by Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

While that may in fact be true, incidents that have occurred at each of his NBA stops — with the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers — arguably suggest otherwise.

Butler, however, turned on the charm during the presser, a not uncommon occurrence for the charismatic player.

Butler did acknowledge that he can be hard on his teammates at times, but indicated he will not stray from the strong personality that made him the player he is today.

“Will I overreact? Probably so,” Butler said. “Here, there are always people late at night, doing all they can to be the best basketball player they can for the Miami Heat.”

He later added, “I’m a little extra at times.”

It remains to be seen how things play out for Butler in South Beach, but given his history, it’s going to be interesting.
