Damian Lillard rips Zion Williamson topping Klay Thompson in ESPN rankings

ESPN released its Top-100 NBA player list this week, and as is often the case with such things, people are taking issue with how the rankings shook out.

Perhaps chief among the gripes over the top-100 rundown is how Zion Williamson somehow is ranked higher than Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson.

The rankings, as laid out by NBA Buzz on Instagram, has Williamson slotted at No. 42. Thompson, meanwhile, comes in seven spots further down the list at No. 49.

Williamson without question has the skills, talent and potential to rocket up any worthwhile player-ranking list … at some point. However, the New Orleans Pelicans’ No. 1 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft has yet to play a single minute at the professional level, so perhaps it’s premature to rank him so high.

Thompson, on the other hand, has an NBA pedigree most players in the league would love to have. After all, the sharpshooter is a three-time NBA champion, five-time All-Star and co-member of the Golden State Warriors’ “Splash Brothers” alongside Stephen Curry.

It’s hardly surprising that there are some within the NBA community who have taken issue with Williamson being ranked higher than Thompson. Among them is Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard, who took to the comments section of the above IG post to share his thoughts, as originally shared by Fadeaway World.

“Man stop w the BS,” Lillard wrote before adding in a subsequent comment, “49 is wild in the first place.”

Thompson has long had to deal with being undervalued and under-appreciated, something that he has been known to address from time to time.

Playing alongside the likes of Curry, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green has unfairly shoved Thompson out of the limelight in some respects. However, there’s no way the Warriors would have made five consecutive NBA Finals appearances and won three titles without his critical contributions.
