Bryce Harper’s wife blasts ‘classless’ Nationals fans over heckling
Bryce Harper has had enough with what he views as unfair treatment from heckling Washington Nationals fans since leaving the team in free agency, and his wife Kayla has since taken to Twitter to show she has her husband’s back.
The Philadelphia Phillies slugger declined to say exactly what hecklers said that elicited his condemnation, but it was clear from his postgame comments following Wednesday’s 5-2 loss to the Nationals that he thinks they took things too far.
“They were fine all game, talking about myself and things like that,” Harper said, per ESPN. “I get it everywhere I go. That’s nothing new.
“But the last two innings, it’s just not right. It’s not right.”
Kayla Harper took to Twitter early Thursday morning, and her tweet appeared to shed some light on what inspired her husband calling out the hecklers. In her tweet, she claims that the hecklers brought Harper’s “son or family into it” while calling such behavior “classless.”
When you bring his son or family into it, yes you’re crossing a line. Stick to your overused overrated and Harper sucks chants if you’re really that loser that goes to a game to heckle someone. Phillies fans might boo him but they don’t bring his 4 week old son into it. Classless https://t.co/NVj3ixyrPY— Kayla Harper (@kayyharper8) September 26, 2019
Harper expected to be booed by Nationals fans whenever he returned to D.C. this season, and of course that’s exactly how things played out every time he played at Nationals Park. It does merit noting, though, that Harper has demonstrated he had no problems dishing it out to Nationals fans when the opportunities presented themselves, so there’s that as well.
It’s no surprise that Nationals fans were left feeling betrayed over Harper’s departure, but if his wife’s allegations are true, the case can be made that the hecklers in question certainly did cross a line, as she put it.
