Eli Manning praises Daniel Jones, says he enjoys working with him

Eli Manning dismissed any notion of a rift between himself and understudy Daniel Jones this week, as the veteran New York Giants quarterback had nothing but good things to say about the rookie.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur ended any speculation over a QB controversy heading into the regular season when he declared last week that Manning would be the team’s Week 1 starter.

The fact that Jones has mostly outplayed Manning in the preseason has led to the belief that the Giants could go against their stated plan of sitting Jones behind Manning in 2019 and put the rookie on top of the depth chart.

Despite Jones’ shadow seemingly looming over his future with the Giants, Manning nevertheless insists the two have a great working relationship.

“I think Daniel is doing a great job,” Manning told Bruce Beck of WNBC in a sideline interview during the Giants’ final preseason game on Thursday night. “He’s working hard, he’s doing all the right things. He’s in there early, he’s asking questions. I enjoy working with him. I enjoy getting to know him, and I think he’s making plays on the field.”

The Giants’ decision to take Jones with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft elicited jeers, if not outright mock and ridicule. The suspicion has been that the Giants could be motivated to usher Jones — who has handled himself amid the backlash as well as can be imagined — along faster than planned in an effort to absolve themselves of scrutiny.

How things play out this season for the Giants amid their potential quarterback conundrum remains to be seen, but Manning continues to say all the right things about his protégé.
