Report: Rumors of Jay-Z becoming NFL team owner ‘simply false’
The rumors that Jay-Z is potentially pursuing an ownership interest in an NFL team are “simply false,” according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora.
Significant buzz was generated by a TMZ Sports report last week that Jay-Z has “significant ownership interest” in an NFL team and the pursuit to accomplish as much “is going to happen in the near future.”
Multiple sources with ties to the league office and NFL owners, however, have indicated there are “no plans in place” to move along any potential ownership bid by Jay-Z.
The speculation that Jay-Z is interested in NFL ownership comes amid the backdrop of the news that his company, Roc Nation, has been brought aboard by the league as a “live music entertainment strategist.” Roc Nation will also assume oversight of the league’s social-justice efforts under the auspices of its Inspire Change project as part of the partnership.
It’s unclear where exactly the Jay-Z ownership rumors came from amid the Roc Nation news, but a “super-plugged in ownership-level source” threw cold water on the entire notion.
“Those kinds of deals don’t exist in the NFL,” the source said. “There is no ownership component to this arrangement.”
The new partnership between Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and the NFL is not without its detractors, as the league’s foremost social-justice advocates, headed by Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills and Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid, have spoken out against it. NFL outcast Colin Kaepernick has similarly taken issue with the optics of Jay-Z partnering with the NFL.
