Man dies after taking part in taco-eating contest at minor league game
A man who participated in a taco-eating contest on Tuesday night at a minor league ballpark in California has died, according to a report from The Fresno Bee.
Dana Hutchings, 41, was taking part in a taco-eating contest at Chukchansi Park, the home stadium of the Fresno Grizzlies, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, when he collapsed. Hutchins was rushed to the Community Regional Medical Center by ambulance and was declared dead on arrival, according to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
The Grizzlies previously confirmed that a fan had been taken by ambulance from the ballpark.
“Out of respect to that fan, we are unable to comment further until more information becomes available,” the Grizzlies said in a news release issued Tuesday night, via The Fresno Bee.
There is currently no official cause established for Hutchings’ death, but an autopsy is planned for Thursday. Eyewitness reports, however, indicate emergency medical technicians treating Hutchings at the scene attempted the Heimlich maneuver and CPR before paramedics arrived and also attempted to resuscitate him.
The taco-eating contest was part of the Grizzlies’ “Taco Tuesday” event, which was being used to promote the team’s Taco Truck Throwdown tentatively scheduled for Saturday.
