Khalil Mack on urgency surrounding Bears: ‘Gotta win now’
The Chicago Bears are among the teams being touted as legitimate Super Bowl contenders heading into the 2019 season, and Khalil Mack recognizes how the window can be remarkably short in the NFL for teams in the hunt for a championship.
In other words, Mack understands that the Bears need to “win now” to avoid failing to reach their title goals.
Speaking to reporters at training camp this week, Mack noted how playing with standout veterans like Charles Woodson and Justin Tuck on the Oakland Raiders alerted him to how contending teams must play with a sense of urgency.
‘You’re running out of time, man,’’ Mack said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. ‘‘All these older dudes let us know at an early point in my career, man, we ain’t got no time to waste.’’
The Bears emerged as one of the surprise teams last season after the preseason acquisition of Mack, winning the NFC North before losing in an absolute heartbreaker to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs.
At age 28 and set to enter his sixth season — a career that includes three First-team All-Pro nods and an NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2016 — Mack acknowledged the aforementioned sense of urgency, not only for himself but for the Bears as well.
‘‘Absolutely,’’ Mack said. ‘‘You’ve gotta win. Gotta win now.’’
With Mack leading the way on the defensive side of the ball and the anticipated ongoing development of Mitch Trubisky at quarterback, the Bears will indeed be a team to watch in the upcoming season.
Mack remains an under-30 player and Trubisky, 24, is only entering his third season. With that in mind, the Bears have years to enjoy their two top players in the prime of their careers. That doesn’t mean Mack does not know all too well that when it comes to a team realizing its potential, it can be a now-or-never proposition.
