Manny Machado rants about MLB Network analysts on Instagram

Manny Machado took to Instagram Live on Tuesday night to deliver a fiery rant at the expense of MLB Network analysts Eric Byrnes and Dan Plesac, who the San Diego Padres superstar trashed as the “biggest tools out there.”

The impetus to Machado’s profane social-media ire stemmed from Byrnes and Plesac weighing in on the fallout from an incident last week when Houston Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick crashed into Los Angeles Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy in a controversial play at the plate. Lucroy was left concussed and Marisnick was suspended for two games from the incident.

Things came to a head during Tuesday night’s Astros-Angels tilt when Angels pitcher Noe Ramirez plunked Marisnick, presumably in an act of retaliation. It led to an ugly situation during which benches cleared.

Machado was not impressed with the commentary provided by Byrnes and Plesac, as he unleashed a diatribe directed at the two commentators, who were defending Marisnick. Machado wasn’t having it.

“They’re protecting that guy. Was it dirty or not? I don’t know,” Machado said of Marisnick’s role in last week’s collision. “Did he have to make a decision real quick? Yeah, he did. But if it was me? I would’ve got probably 20 games. 20 games, 100 percent.

“But you know Byrnes, he knows everything about the game… talking about they threw at his head. What about when I got thrown at my head? Nobody was backing me up. They were saying that I deserved it. I deserved to get thrown at my head. God forbid somebody else gets thrown [at]. They back it up. That’s what this game is coming to now, guys like that.”

It merits noting that there is a history between Machado and Byrnes, with the latter taking shots at the former on a few occasions over the past few years. There’s a good chance Machado’s tirade was spawned in part at least from the bad blood between the two.
