Giants’ Daniel Jones hears boos at Yankee Stadium

Daniel Jones was a controversial choice when the New York Giants selected him with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and the rookie quarterback received a rude welcome from fans while attending Monday’s game at Yankee Stadium.
Jones was shown on the Jumbotron as the New York Yankees hosted the Tampa Bay Rays, and his appearance on the big screen elicited boos, according to multiple dispatches on social media.
#Giants first-round pick Daniel Jones is here at Yankee Stadium, was shown on video board between innings, and received lukewarm reception to say the least. #TheyAreSayingBoo #Yankees #Rays

That’s uncalled for and makes no sense to me. If you thought he should have been drafted later that’s Gettleman’s fault. @Giants fans should be rooting for Daniel Jones. Very poor form to boo him https://t.co/llXLUwSMts

Many draft pundits and NFL insiders believe the Giants reached — or possibly even panicked — by taking Jones so high, especially given subsequent reports suggested there was no need for the team to do so. There has been no shortage of backlash to the pick, with embattled Giants general manager Dave Gettleman taking the brunt of the criticism.
Gettleman has long stressed that Eli Manning is the team’s starting quarterback — not only next season but perhaps longer than that — with Jones serving as the veteran signal-caller’s understudy. Giants head coach Pat Shurmur, however, somewhat muddied the waters last week with some ambiguous comments about who will be under center come Week 1.
All that said, both Manning and Jones have done their best to quiet any potential quarterback controversy amid all the drama. It’s nevertheless clear that Jones remains a polarizing figure in New York given the chilly reception he received at Monday’s Yankees game.
