Steve Kerr joked with Adam Silver about Warriors taking next season off
The Golden State Warriors saw their hopes for a three-peat thwarted in large part by devastating injuries to Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. Following Thursday’s elimination loss to the Toronto Raptors in Game 6 of the Finals, Steve Kerr joked with NBA commissioner Adam Silver about how the league should just give the Warriors next season off.
The Warriors, prior to the injuries suffered by Durant and Thompson, already were facing an uncertain future with the two stars expected to hit free agency. With Durant expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season and Thompson’s torn ACL meaning he’ll be sidelined for a long time as well, the Warriors head coach could not help but go with some gallows humor during his postgame conversation with Silver.
“[Commissioner] Adam Silver came into the locker room and congratulated us, and I asked if maybe we could just take the year off,” Kerr told The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. “Maybe go to Italy, ride bikes and sip wine. Take the year off.”
The Warriors have played deep into the postseason for a considerable stretch, having appeared in five consecutive NBA Finals. That’s a lot of mileage on the legs of players such as Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, among others, something Kerr pointed out as well while noting the Thompson and Durant injuries.
“Our guys, they’ve just been playing so many games. And I don’t know if that’s why the injuries hit,” Kerr said. “But it’s just … kind of insane what happened down the stretch.”
It’s unclear how the Warriors intend to approach a critical offseason, and the injuries suffered by Durant — who was not expected to return, though his injury obviously changes the circumstances — and Thompson — who was expected to be back with Golden State — but the notion the Warriors have earned a much-needed rest cannot be overstated.
