Green Bay station bleeping out ‘Vikings’ in Twin Cities singer’s song
The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings enjoy an intense rivalry, and the bitter border battle between the two NFC North teams inspired a Wisconsin radio station to actually edit a song from a Twin Cities singer/rapper.
Lizzo, a onetime Minneapolis-based musician who was born in Houston, raised in Detroit and now lives in L.A., has a hit on her hands with the tune “Truth Hurts.” It has been receiving airplay on Green Bay’s WIXX-FM — incidentally the Packers’ flagship station — but one line in particular stuck in the craw of Otis Day, WIXX’s music director.
The song’s chorus includes the line, “Fresh photos with the bomb lighting / New man on the Minnesota Vikings,” which is repeated three times in the song.
“Saying them on the Packers’ flagship station just felt a little wrong,” Day said, via the Star Tribune.
WIXX received permission from Lizzo’s record label to alter the song so that instrumentals completely obscure the “Minnesota Vikings” mentions.
“I think they were a little confused,” Day said with a laugh. “I don’t know if they understood, really, the power of football in Green Bay.”
It would be interesting to see whether a Twin Cities radio station would give a song that mentions the Packers similar treatment, but it’s safe to say the Vikings-Packers rivalry is alive and well and 2019.
