Drew Brees on future: ‘Play each season like it’s my last’
Drew Brees is preparing to embark upon his 19th NFL season, and with his Hall of Fame-caliber career is in its twilight, the New Orleans Saints quarterback is making sure to enjoy every minute.
Brees, 40, has previously declined to divulge how long he intends to continuing playing — though at one point he did say he could envision playing until he’s 45 — but the veteran soberly realizes his career is coming to an end sooner rather than later.
“I’m just going to play each season like it’s my last, because I want that mentality, that sense of urgency, that when I wake up every day, man there is something to prove, and I don’t want to miss out on a second of it,” Brees said, via The New Orleans Advocate. “I want to enjoy every moment, take a little more time in the locker room to enjoy my teammates, you know, joke around and just have fun. Dance to Choppa Style in the locker room, right? And just enjoy this time with my kids, because them being a part of this, them being able to experience this is just … it’s just magical. It’s something I’ll remember forever.”
The Saints and Brees agreed to a contract restructuring earlier this spring that cleared nearly $11 million in cap space, though the move will put the team in a precarious situation following the 2019 season. The Saints will be tasked with huge challenge with Brees’ currently projected cap hit heading into the 2020 campaign, but the team presumably will tackle that issue if it ultimately presents itself if Brees chooses to play another season.
There is no question that Brees still ranks among the NFL’s top quarterbacks and has not experienced any decline in his play. That said, regardless of how long he continues to suit up, Brees acknowledges that Father Time always wins. With that in mind — and coming off a brutally disappointing end to last season — it’s all about savoring the moments.
“I realized [before the 2017 season] that I’m closer to the end than I am at the beginning … it’s gone by so fast,” Brees said.
