Blues fan stands to win $100K on $400 wager with Stanley Cup win
A St. Louis Blues fan who made a wager on the team winning the Stanley Cup when things were looking bleak earlier this season is in line for a huge payout should things come out in favor for both himself and his favorite NHL squad.
Blues backer Scott Berry was in Las Vegas back in January for a business tip. With the team out of playoff contention at the time, Berry took a risk before leaving Sin City by wagering $400 on the Blues raising Lord Stanley’s Cup at season’s end at 250-1 odds, which would pay him out $100,000. He also placed a bet on the Cardinals winning the World Series.
“I bet with the heart on this one,” Berry told ESPN. “Before I hit my flight I decided that had I been here gambling I probably would’ve lost around $500, so I pulled that out of the bank account. My max withdrawal was $500, so that was all I could take out. I put $100 on the Cardinals at 15-1 and dumped the rest on the Blues.”
Berry has received — and declined — several high-buck offers for his betting ticket — upwards of $24,000 — but has opted instead to bet on the Blues and a $100,00 payout.
The Blues of course have a long way to go before Berry’s high-risk bet pays dividends. The team can punch its ticket for a Stanley Cup Final berth with a Game 6 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
If the Blues can eke out a win either in Game 6 or Game 7 on Thursday night, the team will face a formidable challenge in a showdown with the red-hot Boston Bruins, who are coming off a sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final.
