Joel Embiid told Drake ‘I’ll be back’ for Game 7 amid Game 5 taunts

Joel Embiid was well aware of how Toronto Raptors superfan Drake was among those inside Scotiabank Arena who trolled him mercilessly Tuesday night during the Philadelphia 76ers’ humiliating 125-89 blowout loss in Game 5 of the teams’ Eastern Conference semifinal series showdown.

In a game in which every 76ers player should have left the court humbled after a game in which Jimmy Butler said the team “laid an egg” in the 36-point throttling, Embiid nevertheless reportedly vowed to Drake that he and his teammates would return to Toronto for Game 7 on Sunday.

Raptors fans, including Drake, reveled in the ability to troll Embiid over his “airplane” celebratory antics earlier in the series, mocked him relentlessly by doing the move.

After the game, Embiid acted as if the taunting had no impact on him.

“I just saw them shake their bodies,” Embiid said. “I didn’t pay attention about what the hell they were doing. Good for them. … I don’t care if it offends anybody, but what I do is all about having fun. I don’t care. And I’m going to do that because I know I’m going to dominate.”

Embiid, battling an upper respiratory infection after suffering through a bout with gastrointestinal distress earlier in the series, was a shell of his usual self in Tuesday’s critical Game 5 loss that leaves the Sixers down 3-2 in the series. When the carnage was all said and done, Embiid finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds in 31 minutes of action.

Butler insisted after the game that the 76ers will “ride or die” with Embiid despite the superstar’s illness and struggles.

All that said, the Sixers will have to win on their home court on Thursday night in Game 6 to force Game 7. If not, Embiid’s vow to Drake will end up being an empty threat.
