Doug Marrone has great reason why he couldn’t contact Jalen Ramsey
The absence of Jalen Ramsey last week from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ voluntary workouts caused quite a stir. Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone subsequently indicating he could not get in touch with the enigmatic cornerback further complicated matters.
It turns out that Marrone had a hilarious reason for his inability to get in contact with Ramsey at first, and explained as much to reporters on Monday.
“I couldn’t figure out what was going on, so we kind of had a little laugh about it.,” Marrone said, via The Florida Times-Union. “Now I have the right number. He’s always had my number, so it’s good.”
Ramsey, along with linebacker Telvin Smith, were no-shows last week, something that drew the ire of Tom Coughlin. The Jaguars front office chief did not explicitly mention Ramsey or Smith, but his comments clearly were directed at the two players. Coughlin was later criticized for his comments by the NFLPA, and Ramsey’s agent also defended his client’s absence.
Ramsey took to Twitter as well to highlight his agent’s defense, not to mention issue one of his own as well.
“Fully aware” & “voluntary” meaning I don’t HAVE to be there BUT they know the EXACT REASONS I am not. My teammates know it’s ALL love & know I’ll be ready when it’s time! https://t.co/NASgnu6egT— Jalen Ramsey (@jalenramsey) April 19, 2019
Coughlin appeared inclined to put an end to the drama on Monday.
“There’s really no need to speak any further on that one,” Coughlin said. “That was an open statement about my beliefs about what the offseason programs are about. That’s enough. You’re not going to get me to answer any more on that one.”
Marrone, meanwhile, made note that once he got Ramsey’s correct number, the two enjoyed a productive chat.
″We had a great talk,″ Marrone said. ″He is training with his brother (at home in Tennessee). He’s spending time with his family and he says he’s going to come back in the best shape that he’s ever been in and he’s all fired up. That was pretty much the conversation. It was a good conversation.″
