MLB investigating racist messages sent to Cubs’ Carl Edwards Jr. on Instagram
Major League Baseball is investigating racist messages sent to Chicago Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. on social media, sources tell The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney.
Edwards was optioned to the minors on April 6 after only seven games amid a brutal start to the season in which he worked only 1.2 innings in four appearances while posting a 32.4 ERA.
Before his arrival to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, Edwards is said to have received racist messages on Instagram, which “reached the level of hate speech,” Mooney writes. The messages have “drawn the attention” of MLB, the Cubs organization as well as the MLBPA.
Major League Baseball is presently conducting an investigation into the matter, sources say, and subsequently issued a statement regarding the matter.
“We are aware of the situation,” said an MLB spokesperson. “We have a team that works with social-media companies to take appropriate actions in situations like this.”
