Nuggets fan ousted after berating official who ejected Nikola Jokic

A fan was escorted out of Pepsi Center Sunday after he began to berate the official who ejected Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic during the game.

The incident that led to the fan’s removal from the arena occurred as the officials left the court following the Nuggets’ 95-90 loss to the Washington Wizards.

Meanwhile, Jokic’s controversial ejection occurred late in the third quarter.

According to a report from The Denver Post, a person with knowledge of the situation indicated the fan berated official James Capers, who is African-American, and called him racist.

The male fan was standing by the railing during his outburst as players and officials were departing the floor. He was singled out by an arena staffer, which later led to him being escorted out of the arena. He was subsequently spotted speaking with arena security in the bowels of Pepsi Center.

In light of the recent high-profile outbreak of ugly interactions between unruly fans and players — highlighted specifically by the heated confrontation between Russell Westbrook and a Jazz fan at Vivint Smart Home Arena last month, among other such incidents — odds are NBA teams are paying much close attention to fan behavior, especially if it appears to cross a line.

There was no racial slur uttered by the fan during Sunday’s incident, a Nuggets spokesman told The Denver Post, and the team does not intend to make any further statement concerning what occurred.
