Will Ferrell to join L.A. Kings’ broadcast booth as Ron Burgundy

Will Ferrell will bring out his classic Ron Burgundy character for one more real-world comedic bit when the “Anchorman” star makes an in-character appearance in the broadcast booth for Thursday’s matchup between the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.

Ferrell as Burgundy will join FOX Sports West broadcasters Alex Faust and Jim Fox for the Kings’ coverage of the Pacific Division showdown. He’s expected to join the booth live during the second period.

The original “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” became a oft-referenced comedy classic way back in 2004. The sequel, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” hit theaters in 2013 to considerably less acclaim and fanfare yet still delighted fans of the obnoxious newscaster and his merry band of news team colleagues.

Those who would suggest that it seems somewhat dated for Ferrell to dig Burgundy out of the cobwebs so many years later are not aware of the fact that there is now a podcast starring Ferrell fittingly titled, “The Ron Burgundy Podcast” that’s produced by the actor’s Funny or Die production company.

As far as sports are concerned, Ferrell (Burgundy) was scheduled to host “SportsCenter” back in 2013 to promote “Anchorman 2,” but the appearance was nixed due to expected breaking news involving then-FSU quarterback Jameis Winston. Footage of Burgundy interviewing Peyton Manning later surfaced, however.

All that said, expect renewed occurrences of old-school “Anchorman” references to hit NHL Twitter throughout Thursday night.
