LeBron James-inspired play ‘King James’ set to premiere in 2019

“King James,” an upcoming play about LeBron James’ profound influence on Cleveland during his two stints with the Cavaliers, is slated to premiere in Chicago in 2019.

The play, written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, is later slated for a 2020 run in Los Angeles, per a report from The Los Angeles Times.

“King James” will be presented by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago from May 7 through June 2020. In Los Angeles, the Center Theatre Group will stage the play, although dates have yet to be announced, but it will occur during the CTG’s 2020-2021 season.

Not much is known as of yet about the play, but CTG’s announcement about “King James” did provide a description.

“‘King’ LeBron James’ reign in Cleveland brings promise, prosperity and renewal to a city in desperate need of all three. As the city celebrates a championship, two estranged friends spar in a verbal game of 1 on 1, revealing past secrets, present truths, and a possible future after ‘The King’ has left the building.”

James without question has long had an eye on the entertainment business, primarily through his production company SpringHill Entertainment, which the Los Angeles Lakers superstar founded with longtime business partner Maverick Carter.

Speculation was that James opted to join the Lakers this past offseason as a means to make further inroads into Hollywood, although that notion was later denied.

Interestingly, it was reported last year that SpringHill Entertainment is backing a film based upon a book written about his experiences playing youth basketball while growing up in Akron, Ohio. The upcoming play of course will focus instead upon his NBA career in Cleveland, when James ultimately delivered the region a long-awaited championship.

Perhaps the news that has created the most fanfare related to James’ ongoing successful foray into the entertainment world, however, is the recent announcement that a premiere date for “Space Jam 2,” which James will serve as star as well as one of the producers, has been set.

Expect James sporting a “Tune Squad” jersey alongside Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny and the rest of the gang to hit theaters on July 16, 2021.
