Warriors gush over Kings’ potential: Playoff rivalry ‘coming soon’

The Golden State Warriors squeaked by the Sacramento Kings Thursday night, edging their in-state counterparts by a score of 125-123, but the victory did not stop the team from gushing afterward over the Kings’ potential.

While the Warriors have posted a 4-0 record against the Kings this season, those wins have come by a grand total of only 12 points, which amounts to the third-smallest margin of victory in a four-plus-game sweep in NBA history, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Kevin Durant suggested Thursday’s match-up was the “fourth game that we deserved to lose” to the Kings this season.

Draymond Green, meanwhile, praised the Kings, calling the emerging squad “scrappy, young, probably the fastest team in the history of the NBA,” That said, Green was not quite ready to anoint the Kings as the league’s next big thing, although he believes they’re getting there.

“At some point it’ll definitely be both of us in the playoffs,” Green said, via ESPN’s Nick Friedell. “It may happen this year, they’re right there, maybe not. We’ll see, but it’s coming soon.

“As far as a rivalry, man, they’re talented. I think rivalry, no disrespect to them, but the other team got to win some games before it can really be a rivalry. But I have no doubt in my mind that that team is going to win a lot of games coming up here soon. Maybe not this year, who knows? But they’re putting it together. They’re doing a damn good job.”

As things stand in the Western Conference heading into Friday’s action, the Kings (30-28) are only 1.5 games back of the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers.

Kings star Buddy Hield, however, exhibited supreme confidence about the team’s playoff prospects, jokingly saying, “I’d bet my house” on the Kings qualifying for the postseason.

It certainly sounds like the Warriors, while hedging their bets a bit, would not necessarily disagree with Hield. Further, for what it’s worth Basketball Reference gives the Kings a 21.3 percent chance of making it into the playoffs.
