Saquon Barkley, Baker Mayfield made wager over NFL ROY Award

The run to the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award is a two-man race between Saquon Barkley and Baker Mayfield, and the former revealed this week the two young stars have made a wager over the outcome of the voting.

Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft, and Barkley, taken No. 2 by the Giants, are believed to be neck-and-neck ahead of Saturday’s official announcement.

Barkley, who previously topped Mayfield to earn the fan-voted Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year honors, revealed the nature of the bet with Mayfield.

“The loser’s got to get someone else a chain,” Barkley told Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot on Radio Row Thursday. “We get to pick the chain and we get to have fun with it because obviously everyone’s talking about who’s going to win.

“At the end of the day we’d love to see each other win, but we’d also love to see ourselves win, too. But we made a little bet with it just to show how friendly we are that it’s bigger than just the award.”

Barkley went on to call Mayfield “amazing,” “outstanding” and a “heck of a player,” but nevertheless indicated in a previous interview he’s confident about landing some more hardware.

“If you asked my peers that played against me or coaches that had to play against me … ‘Who is rookie of the year?’ I think they would say me,” Barkley said on ESPN’s “Get Up” Wednesday.

Both Barkley and Mayfield enjoyed outstanding rookie campaigns and appear poised for successful NFL careers. It goes without saying either player would be a terrific choice for the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
