Shaquille O’Neal thinks Carmelo Anthony is ‘a Laker fit’

Monday’s transaction between the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls finally allows Carmelo Anthony the ability to determine the next step in his career.

With chatter suggesting that joining the Los Angeles Lakers would be appealing to the 34-year-old veteran, Shaquille O’Neal weighed in to state Anthony would be a good “fit” on the LeBron James-led squad.

The Rockets agreed to trade Anthony and cash considerations to the Bulls, ending his ill-fated and brief tenure with the team. The move was merely a formality, as it’s a foregone conclusions that the Bulls will waive Anthony; it’s just a matter of when.

With all that in mind — not to mention the belief that James was intrigued by the notion of bringing longtime pal Anthony into the fold (although the Lakers were said to be not as interested at the time) — speculation now abounds regarding where the veteran may land.

Shaq, like many others, believes all signs point to Carmelo joining forces with LeBron in L.A.

“I think he’s a Laker fit,” O’Neal said during TNT’s NBA coverage Monday night. “I think a lot of people think he’s done. I think he’s got one, maybe two more years left. It would be a good city for him. Warm city. I think if he could get some opportunity, especially when LeBron [James] is out of the game to get it going, maybe he could create some type of spark for them.”

It remains to be seen how things play out for Anthony, but it stands to reason that James presumably could convince Lakers brass that his friend can contribute to the team. If so, it would not be a surprise to see James and Anthony as teammates.

After all, it’s not like Anthony is drawing an incredible amount of interest at this stage of his career, especially given how poorly things played out in Houston.
